The beautiful Victorian building that houses the Canterbury Library is currently being remodeled. Unfortunately, visitors can only view the building from the outside right now, which made me all the more curious as to how it looks on the inside. Plans include a glass elevator in the center and a general expanding of the building. The library still considered their patrons in this endeavor, since of course, serving the public's needs is generally the number one goal of a public library. During the renovation, a temporary library site is used to offer books for all ages, DVD's, and computer access. While the temporary library cannot be nearly as aesthetically pleasing, it serves its purpose in bringing information to the local community. Books in the temporary library are organized according to genre. 
Much like many of the other libraries we visited, it has the bookstore feel. These displays are highly browsable and make it easy to find what is needed. The temporary site even offers story time for different age groups of children. The high use and importance of the library was demonstrated in my visit, which was on a Saturday afternoon. The small room was filled with all sorts of people, men in work uniforms, families, students doing research and so on. It is no wonder why over ten million dollars is being spent to renovate the older building. Hopefully the new library will be open the next time I visit the charming town of Canterbury.
