Maughan Library

Since we had been staying in King's College dormitories, it was cool to get to see more of the college in visiting the college's Maughan Library. The current library was opened in 2002 and has an awesome collection for students interested in American studies (those would be interesting to read), classics, French studies, linguistics, geography, music and many more. The library is housed in the former public records office, which lends the library some historic character. The price of having gorgeous rooms to study and work in, is that, since it is a historic building, the library must maintain the old rooms and is responsible for the care and upkeep of these treasures.

One new idea used by the librarians is the roaming concept. Many librarians have tried this out to make libraries more user friendly and less intimidating to new and even experienced users. The librarian simply walks around to see check on users to see if they need any assistance. The overall consensus from the students is mixed, but I am certain many freshman have been helped by it. The large, multi-level library can be very intimidating to a new student, so having a kind librarian to help out is surely a good thing.
